Welcome to Year 1
We are looking forward to spending the year learning together. Year 1 is the first year of the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum. We will start the year by supporting children to make the transition from their Reception class and curriculum and by further developing the skills necessary for a successful time in Key Stage 1.
We fully appreciate the support of parents in this process. To help the classes run well please remember the following routines:
- Reading books and book bags are needed in school every day, even on the days that they are not changed.
- Homework is given out to children on a Friday and returned on a Wednesday, including spelling books.
- PE kits are needed on a Tuesday and Wednesday by both Kingfishers and Dolphins.
- Reading books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
We are looking forward to a local area visit to enrich our classroom learning and another visit further afar (to be planned at a later date).Further information about these will be given in letters from the class teacher.
Our topics for the year include:
- All about me
- Let’s go exploring
Phonics, the use of letters and sounds to read and write is a major focus of your child’s studies in Year 1. Most of the children are now working on phase 5 phonics. If you have any questions about Phonics please speak to Mrs. Smith. Children will also be learning phonics in Nursery, Reception Year 2 and Year 3.
