Welcome to Year 2
There are new, exciting learning opportunities this term for Year 2 children. This term, children’s learning will incorporate practical aspects of learning combined with the application of new skills taught. We aim to deepen children’s learning in all topic areas and promote a positive attitude within.
Children will continue to practice phase 5 and learn to spell with suffixes. The spellings received every Friday will reflect their week’s learning. Children will also be encouraged to use their new sounds in speaking and writing. The spelling tests will reflect their learning and we appreciate your continued support to help your child learn these weekly.
Both year 2 classes will judge the frequency of books changed based on their class’ needs. Please remember that re-reading books are encouraged to boost your child’s confidence, word recognition and improves their fluency. The guided reading sessions, book-based English lessons and one-to-one reading with Year 2 children also form part of their learning in reading. Any support at home is greatly appreciated. We would also like to encourage children to read a range of books at home, including non-fiction and poetry and they are welcomed to share their favourite texts in class. There is also an exciting BOOK READING CHALLENGE this term that the children are very excited about!
This term, children will re-visit their place value knowledge and apply their learning to work out operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). A wide range of teaching approaches are adopted to support and deepen children’s learning.
The additional topics that will be covered are:
- Geometry (2D & 3D, Position and Direction)
- Data Handling
- Capacity and Temperature
This term, children will be working on retelling stories based on the book the ‘Cave Baby’ and ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’. The grammar focus will be on noun phrases and expanded noun phrases. We will also focus on conjunctions (and, or, but) to co-ordinate sentences and conjunctions (because, when, if) to add subordinate clauses.
We will stretch children’s learning with sentence types (statements, commands, questions and exclamations) and the related punctuation marks. We will continue to reinforce the use of conjunctions and encourage children to read through and edit their work. Weekly in-class reflections will also enable children to reflect on the progress they make.
This term, children will explore materials and their properties. This topic is practical-based and gives child opportunities to discover their scientific world. We appreciate every parent contribution, support and involvement.
We are excited to introduce children to algorithms, learning about sequencing and de-bugging programmes. Children will have access to multiple computing resources to achieve their learning targets.
Year 2 will be have P.E on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure that your child has their full P.E kit on both of these days. This term the focus will be on dance, games and multi-skills.
Children are expected to read every day for roughly 20 minutes. Please record this in their reading record every day. If you have any messages relating to your child’s reading please feel free to use this as a means of communication ( i.e: Please can I have 2 books sent home over this holiday period).
Homework will reflect their week’s learning and include handwriting practice, write-ups and grammar-based activities.
Homework will reflect their week’s learning and will include access to MyMaths for children to use at home. Please also support your child for weekly mental maths tests. Please feel free to discuss your child’s learning with teachers at the end of the school day.
