Our curriculum

At All Saints’, our curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision, “All Believing, All Achieving”, and Micah 6:8: to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. We provide an ambitious, broad and balanced education that helps every pupil achieve, belong and thrive.

Our curriculum reflects the diversity of Upper Norwood, Croydon, modern Britain and the wider world. It builds secure foundations in communication, reading, writing and mathematics and develops knowledge, vocabulary and skills across every subject. We have high expectations for pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils, pupils learning English as an additional language, pupils known to social care and children who join us at different points. We identify barriers early and provide adaptive teaching, reasonable adjustments and targeted support.

How our curriculum is organised

We teach the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework in Nursery and Reception and the National Curriculum in Years 1 to 6. Religious Education and Relationships and Health Education are also taught. Subjects are carefully sequenced so that pupils build knowledge and skills over time. Overarching themes create meaningful connections, while the distinctive knowledge and ways of working in each subject remain clear.

Curriculum approaches and programmes

 

Teaching and assessment

Teachers connect new learning to what pupils already know, explain and model clearly, use worked examples, check understanding and guide pupils towards independence. Learning intentions and success criteria help pupils understand, monitor and improve their work. Retrieval and spaced practice help important knowledge move into long-term memory.

Assessment includes questioning, observation, discussion, retrieval, review of work and proportionate tests. Teachers use this information to address misconceptions, adapt teaching and provide additional support or challenge. Assessment supports learning and is not used to narrow the curriculum.

Enrichment and personal development

Pupils learn beyond the classroom through Forest School, educational visits, visitors, performances, arts and music events, links with All Saints’ Church, themed days and weeks, pupil leadership and local community experiences. Our values – Respect, Peace, Love, Faith, Perseverance and Hope – are developed through the curriculum, relationships and worship.

Religious Education withdrawal

Parents and carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from all or part of Religious Education. Before making a decision, we encourage parents and carers to meet with the Headteacher so that the school’s approach and the practical arrangements can be discussed. Requests should be made in writing to the Headteacher. The school remains responsible for the supervision of any withdrawn pupil but is not required to provide alternative curriculum teaching.

Accessibility and inclusion

We are committed to enabling every pupil, including disabled pupils and pupils with SEND, to participate fully in the curriculum. We use adaptive teaching, reasonable adjustments and targeted support while maintaining ambitious curriculum goals. Our current Accessibility Plan, SEND Information Report and Equality information are available through the school website.

Withdrawal from Religious Education

Religious Education is an important part of the curriculum at All Saints’ C of E Primary School. Parents and carers have the legal right to request that their child is withdrawn from all or part of Religious Education.

Before making a request, we encourage parents and carers to meet with the Headteacher so that the school’s approach to RE and the practical implications of withdrawal can be discussed.

Requests must be made in writing to the Headteacher. The school will supervise pupils who are withdrawn but is not required to provide alternative curriculum teaching.

Phonics and Reading at All Saints

At All Saints’ C of E Primary School, we teach early reading through Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics, our systematic synthetic phonics programme.

Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 receive regular phonics teaching. They read decodable books that are closely matched to the sounds they have learned. Pupils who need further help receive prompt additional phonics teaching so that they can keep up with the programme.

Literacy Tree Reading Leaves supports the teaching of reading across the school. Pupils develop accuracy, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and enjoyment of reading through carefully selected texts.

Literacy Tree is our established whole-school writing programme. Literacy Links supports the development of spoken language and oracy in EYFS and Key Stage 1.
