  • Strategic Direction:
this means making sure that the school is using all its resources to improve the learning and achievement of all pupils.
  • Critical friend:
the governing body has a responsibility for monitoring and evaluating the school’s effectiveness and asking challenging questions.
  • Accountability:
the governing body is responsible and is accountable to parents and the wider community for the school’s performance.

HOW THE GOVERNING BODY IS COMPOSED
OUR GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

Every term we have a Full Governors Meeting when every governor is expected to attend. Any governor can put on the agenda an item about the working of the school. To help us carry out our duties we have a number of committees. Each committee has terms of reference that are agreed by the full governing body. These terms of reference state the responsibilities of the committee and the decisions they can take. Each committee meets at least once a term. These are;

The Resources Committee. This committee is responsible for monitoring the school budget and other financial matters such as acting on recommendations of audit checks. The committee also is responsible for staffing matters and the maintence and upkeep of the building, It is also responsible for Health and Safety matters.

Education, Curriculum & Pupil Voice Committee. This committee is responsible for monitoring the learning, teaching and pupil standards of achievement. It monitors the progress that children are making and closely looks at the performance of particular groups such as boys/girls, special needs, children who are supported through the pupil premium, EAL children to make sure that all children are achieving their best. As a church school it also monitors the quality and contents of Collective Worship and Religious Education.

Welfare, Parents & External Relations Committee. This committee is responsible for the safety and well being of pupils, the links with parents, All Saints Church and the local community. It works with parents in encouraging them to become involved in the life of the school, It monitors the attendance of pupils and monitors how the school is supporting vulnerable pupils and parents. It also receives reports on the behaviour of children, including any exclusions and examples of outstanding behaviour.

There are also other groups of governors that are particularly responsible for school matters. These include;

Staff Performance Review Committee. This committee of 3 governors receive reports on the annual performance reviews of staff, including the head teacher and any recommendations on pay.

Head teachers Performance Management Team. This consists of 3 governors who are supported by a member of the Southwark Diocesan Board of Governors. They set the annual targets for the head teacher and review progress throughout the year and decide at the end of the cycle if these targets have been met.

Admissions Committee.  Keeps the admission policy under review and how it is being implemented.

Safeguarding Governors. 2 governors are qualified in monitoring the safe guarding checks the school makes on staff. They study the records held on staff and make recommendations.

Faith Committee This group of governors with staff and pupils meet to support the school in developing its Christian ethos. It looks at the R.E. curriculum, collective worship and how the Christian values of the school are embedded in the daily life of the school.

To get their own perspectives on the life of the school governors spend a morning in school every term. During this visit we meet staff, observe teaching, look at children’s work and attend assemblies

As we are a Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School the majority of governors are called foundation governors. Their main responsibility is to ensure that the school stays true to its Christian Foundation. The majority of foundation governors are appointed by the Church Council of All Saints Church, Upper Norwood as the Church founded the school way back in the nineteenth century. Two other foundation governors are appointed by the Diocese of Southwark, the Diocese is the geographical area in which the school is situated.

Other governors represent the school staff and the local community which also includes parents.

These include one local authority governor chosen by Croydon Local Authority, one co-opted governor, an elected teacher governor and a governor to represent the support staff.

Two governors are elected by the parents of the school.

Father Leonard and Josephine Copeland are ex-officio governors because of their positions, Vicar of All Saints Church, Upper Norwood and Head teacher of the school.

PECUNIARY INTERESTS

In September 2019 all the individual Governors declared that they had no pecuniary interests in the school except for Shelisha Bent who works for Pearsons Limited, who produce educational resources, and like all Governors she would declare prior to any meeting if it was relevant.

GOVERNOR BIOGRAPHIES

SHELISHA BENT:

Local Authority Governor. I have been a governor at All Saints’ since 2011. I have over 10 years experience working in HR and i became a school governor having finished my masters and enjoyed my studying. I wanted to contribute by “giving back to education” and give the benefit of my professional HR experienceto a governing board and therefore was appointed by the local authority, Since I have been a governor, I have been chair of The Teaching and Learning Committee for the last 3vyears.

I particularly enjoy working with the teachers and other governors to improve the standards of the education experience for the children which involves the analysis of data and visiting the school and reviewing the children’s work.

ELIZABETH GRIMES:

I am delighted to join the governing body at All Saints’ CofE Primary School.  My family have lived in Croydon for the past 24 years and all of our children have attended Croydon schools, receiving first class education.  My husband and I attend All Saints’ Church and it is a privilege for me to represent the church as a foundation governor.

I am also a teacher in a Croydon secondary school.  I love being a teacher.  I will bring a diverse range of experience gained in different educational settings and I sincerely hope I can make a positive contribution to the governance of the school.

Finally, I am particularly inspired by the fantastic work the teachers are doing, led by their dynamic Headteacher.

JONAS WONTUMI:

All Saints Church,Foundation Governor. I’m a Financial and Procurement professional with additional experiences in operational, educational and retail management. Originally from Ghana, formally Goldcoast) and belong to the famous tribe “Ga’s#smileyface. I’m passionate about volunteering as it is one of my ways of giving back to society, Being a governor over the past few years has offered me the opportunity to utilise my knowledge and skills to support the Governing Board at All Saints School while acquiring new skills.

My favourite author is John Gresham and favourite quote “Only the strong survive, only the wise excel”. –MC Lyte. Finally blue is the colour and Chelsea is the name #football!

CHRISTOPHER CHIKWENDU:

All Saints’ Church Foundation Governor. I joined the governing body in 2013. My background is in financial management with over 10 years’ experience in further education colleges. I am currently a Management Accountant for a private college in central London and a member of the college management team. I am also a member of the Church Council for All Saints’ Church, Upper Norwood who elected me to be a foundation governor. Being a school governor is an excellent opportunity for me to support my local school from a personal and church perspective by using the skills I’ve gained in a professional capacity for the benefit of the school. As far as hobbies are concerned I am a tennis fan and play for my local tennis club.

SARAH GANGER:

Sarah Ganger has been a governor of All Saints’ since 2019.  Originally from Houston, Texas in the USA, Sarah moved to Croydon with her husband and four children in 2018 in order for her husband to pastor a church in the area.  All four of Sarah’s children currently attend All Saints’, and from the very first visit for a school tour, they have been thankful to be at a school that focuses so much on understanding the needs of the individual child and the importance of healthy relationships.

Sarah worked in education in Texas as a science teacher in secondary school and later as a supply teacher at all levels of primary and secondary school.  Sarah believes deeply in the power that educators have to influence the lives of children in a positive way, helping them learn both academic skills and social and emotional skills that they will need for success in life.  In her role as governor, she seeks to support the school leadership and staff at All Saints’ as they serve children in such a way as to help them to become well-rounded, healthy adults.  She is currently serving on the Faith committee, the Education, Curriculum and Pupil Voice committee and the Welfare, Parents and External Relations committee.  She also volunteers with the PTA, Chess Club and Kidz Klub at All Saints’.

Sarah loves to read, write and play board games with her husband, children and friends.  Her favourite topic of conversation include faith, foster care and adoption and brain science (nerd alert!).  She and her family are actively involved with their church, Southside Baptist Church in Thornton Heath.  Her whole family is enjoying discovering the joys of South London life, including cheering for Crystal Palace FC!

IVANA BRSKOVSKA:

My name is Ivana Brskovska and I’m originally from the Czech Republic. I’ve been living in London from 2006 and I’ve got a son who went to All Saint’s Primary School from the Nursery through to Year 6, which he successfully finished in 2019. Education has always been very important for me and my family. I believe that education comes in many different shapes and forms, and we all learn through our lives.

It is not only about academic learning but also about seeing examples of behaviour and kindness which forms us as children but also as adults. Being kind and considered against others is vital for our society and that’s one of the things I’m trying to teach children. I have been working with children from 6 months for over ten years.

My education background is four A’Levels; General Psychology, Stress Management and Cognitive-behaviour therapy courses, Early Years Practice qualification, Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business Studies and HR Diploma Level 5. I’m an energetic person who enjoys walking in the countryside, running, reading, good movies and I’m always open to try new things. I’m involved in supporting a few charities and always happy to help where and when I can.

HILARY GRAINGER:

Diocesan Foundation Governor. Hilary has an extensive career in education for over forty years, teaching, leading and advising across  a range of schools and settings. She has taught in the Midlands and South London and was headteacher of a Church School in Coulsdon for twelve years. Following retirement from full-time headship, Hilary has worked on a consultancy basis as a Primary adviser for the Diocese of Southwark supporting school improvement.

Hilary is married with one grown up daughter. She enjoys walking and yoga, singing and playing the piano, when there is time! She is a member of the United Reformed Church in South Croydon, and is involved in helping to lead the Junior Church.

ARTHUR WILLIAMS:

Diocesan Foundation Governor. I have been a governor since 2005. I am now the chair having been previously the vice chair. For 15 years I was head teacher of a Streatham Church of England Primary School and before that a deputy head teacher and class teacher. I presently attend Immanuel and Saint Andrew Church of England, Streatham Common. I was a magistrate and sat in the Adult and Youth Courts at Wimbledon and the Appeal Court at Kingston.

I regularly visit primary and secondary schools across South London explaining how the Youth Justice system works. I live in Streatham but having grown up on Merseyside I have a season ticket at Tranmere Rovers Football Club.

STAFF GOVERNORS:

JOSEPHINE COPELAND is an ex-officio governor due to her status as head teacher.

DIANE GEORGE is the deputy head teacher and is the elected teacher governor.

JANICE RAWLINS is a member of the support staff and has been elected to represent the support staff.
