PHSE and RHSE Policy 2026

– Changes to the statutory guidance

Providing a safe and supportive school environment underpins everything we do at All Saints. We want our pupils to achieve well, develop healthy relationships and become confident, responsible lifelong learners.

The Department for Education published revised statutory guidance for Relationships, Sex and Health Education in July 2025. This guidance came into effect on 1 September 2026.

We have therefore reviewed our PSHE and RSHE curriculum and policy. All Saints continues to use the You, Me, PSHE programme from Islington as its core curriculum. We have updated and supplemented the programme to ensure that it reflects the revised statutory guidance and meets the needs of our pupils and community.

Our curriculum:

  • promotes democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance;
  • meets our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and SEND Code of Practice;
  • helps pupils recognise safe, unsafe, appropriate and inappropriate behaviour, both in person and online;
  • teaches pupils about personal boundaries, bodily autonomy, privacy and trusted adults;
  • supports pupils’ mental, emotional and physical wellbeing;
  • is age-appropriate, developmentally appropriate and accessible to pupils with SEND and pupils who use English as an additional language; and
  • helps pupils develop the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in modern Britain.

Important additions for September 2026

The strengthened curriculum includes:

  • Personal safety: fire, water, road and railway safety, basic first aid, personal boundaries and help-seeking.
  • Mental wellbeing: recognising and managing emotions, loneliness, resilience, bereavement, grief and loss.
  • Online safety: privacy, personal information, harmful content and contact, age restrictions, scams, online financial harms and balanced use of technology.
  • Relationships: healthy and unhealthy relationships, friendship difficulties, respectful disagreement, permission, pressure and reporting concerns.
  • Biological vocabulary: correct anatomical language taught factually and sensitively to support health and safeguarding.

Parent and carer consultation

Parents and carers were invited to contribute to our policy review during the first two weeks of September 2026. A further parent workshop will be held on 21 September 2026, where parents can learn about the curriculum, ask questions and view representative teaching materials.

Following consultation, the final policy will be considered by the Governing Body and published on the school website. Parents may also request to view the curriculum materials used by the school.

Parents’ rights

Relationships Education, Health Education and National Curriculum science are statutory. Parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from these lessons, including statutory teaching about puberty and reproduction within science.

Parents may request that their child is withdrawn from any additional primary sex education taught outside Relationships Education, Health Education and National Curriculum science. Parents should contact the Headteacher to discuss this.
